Movie Review - Don't Worry Darling
Since we just have survived a global pandemic, and due to the fact that I am an international student without a car, attending a school in Magnolia, Arkansas, that does not have a movie theatre, it has been a very long time since I went to see a movie in a movie theatre. Before the pandemic started, I was used to going to the movie theatre with my friends and family a lot, at least once every two weeks. My uncle has a big interest in movies and even has his own movie theatre in his apartment, which might not be a public movie theatre but I will still count it as one, and it used to be a family tradition to visit him a couple of times a year to watch a movie together. Because of all this, before heading down to El Dorado I was looking forward a lot to watching the movie.
Another reason why I was looking forward to going and watching a movie at a movie theatre, was because of the choice of movie. Before even looking at the website to decide what movie to pick I already had a movie in mind that I really wanted to watch. I am a very big fan of Harry Styles and I have known about the movie he is acting in for a while. So therefore my decision for this assignment was very easy, I went to watch Don't Worry Darling. I have been reading and watching a lot about the movie on social media like Instagram and TikTok and I was very excited to go and watch it.
As I opened the doors to the movie theatre the first thing that came to my mind was the smell of popcorn, just as I remember how it used to be for me while back home in Sweden and opening the doors to a movie theatre. I would say the smell of newly popped popcorn is a great explanation for what a movie theatre smells like, no matter to what movie theatre you are going to. Me and my friend that was taking me to the movie theatre started off our movie experience by going to the concession stand to get some snacks and something to drink. We both got a bag of popcorn and a cup of Pepsi each. For the drinks, we both got a small-sized cup which was $4.99 each, and the popcorn was $7 each.
The movie started at 6:45pm and that was easily noticeable by observing the workers behind the concession stand. The girl seemed a bit tired and stressed and she was almost a little bit rude in her tone as she spoke to me and my friend. I did keep in mind that she had probably been there for a while and I have some experience myself of working at a concession stand so I was able to not think too much about it. Comparing the concession stand itself to how it is back home in Sweden, I would say that the different types of snacks and drinks are pretty much the same over here. There are usually a few more workers working at the concession stand in Sweden compared to what I saw here. But the prices and everything else is pretty much the same.
After getting the snacks we wanted we made our way into the line to go into the room where Don't Worry Darling was shown. We sat down and I started to observe the room and the other people in there. The room was filled with people, mostly females but also a few males, and once it got closer to the starting time of the movie, almost every seat in there was occupied. Which did not surprise me really, I have heard a lot of good things about the movie, and then of course the cast member Harry Styles is a really good reason to watch the movie.
Inside it looked almost the same as back home and I don't think I would be able to point out if it was a movie theatre in Sweden or in the U.S. if I didn't know where it was before. The only thing I could notice a difference in was how the audience reacted during the movie. To me it seemed like the audience over here was much quieter during the movie compared to what I usually see back home while watching a movie at a movie theatre. I am used to most of the people in the room being more loud in the reactions, and here there were mostly quiet reactions, such as smiles and looks on everyone's faces. So this was a bit new to me.
I believe that the producers tried to reach out to girls around late teenage years and late 20s because of the theme of the movie but also because of the choice of including Harry Styles in it, since that is where his fanbase is of age. I would say that they did reach this audience successful because most of the people in the movie theatre seemed to be around that age and based of the, soundless, reactions in there I would say almost everyone enjoyed the movie a lot.
The movie is directed by Olivia Wilde and it is about Alice (Florence Pugh) as she discovers that the community she is a part of is a fallacy. Her doting husband Jack (Harry Styles), works for a mysterious corporation, the Victory Project, overseen by the sinister Frank (Chris Pine). The characters thrive under routine and traditional gender roles, until Alice notices unsettling occurrences that threaten the illusion of her perfect, happy life. I enjoyed the movie a lot and I do think that the price was worth it. I love the theme and the actors are very good. I would probably say this about any movie that is including Harry Styles but the movie Don't Worry Darling is very good and I would recommend everyone to watch it.
